If you have coverage through WellCare, you may have received a letter saying that Kentucky River Medical Center (KRMC) and related clinics would be out of network as of Sept. 15, 2026. We understand that receiving a letter like that must have been unsettling.
First, we are working diligently to reach an agreement with WellCare and remain in network. As of today, you can continue to receive care at KRMC and associated clinics as you always have.
For many patients, driving outside of Breathitt County is not ideal for managing a chronic condition, recovering from surgery, or caring for a family member. Keeping care available close to home in our community is our priority.
In summary:
- Your coverage at Kentucky River Medical Center has not changed. You can keep your scheduled appointments.
- Letters like the one you received are a routine part of contract negotiations. The letters do not mean we won’t reach an agreement by September 15.
- We will keep you updated. If anything changes, you’ll hear it from us directly, and we’ll help you understand your options.

If the Medicare portion of the plan ends on September 15, Medicare patients can change plans during Open Enrollment (October 15 – December 7, 2026); however, the new plan won’t take effect until January 1, 2027.
